JOHN STORRS
View of a Church by Night.

Oil on canvas, circa 1954. 807x655 mm; 31 3/4x25 3/4 inches. Signed in oil, lower right recto. Offered Sotheby's, New York, October 10, 2007, lot 58, as property of the Palm Springs Art Museum for the benefit of the acquisitions fund.

Storrs (1885-1956) trained at the Art Institute of Chicago and Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia, before traveling to Paris in 1912 to study sculpture under Auguste Rodin (1840-1917). In the 1920's, Storrs began sculpting in the modernist style for which he is primarily known, culminating in the 1930 commission Ceres, which crowns the Chicago Board of Trade Building. His painted oeuvre often focuses on symbolist architectural motifs like the current lot.
