JOHN T. SCOTT (1940 - 2007)
Cathedral.

Woodcut on Coventry white wove paper, 2003. 1524x1016 mm; 60x40 inches, full margins. From an edition of 10.

This block, one of a series of monumental woodcuts of New Orleans, was carved by the artist with a modified miniature chainsaw into a single sheet of plywood. Born in New Orleans and raised in the lower Ninth Ward, John T. Scott has produced artwork shaped largely by diverse and local African, African-American, Caribbean and Creole cultures. Throughout his life, his work was also influenced by the blues and jazz musical traditions. Scott's paintings, sculpture and prints have been featured in many gallery and museum exhibitions, and in 1992, he was awarded a prestigious MacArthur Foundation Fellowship.
