WHITFIELD LOVELL (1959 - )
Untitled.

Collaged playing cards and graphite on buff wove paper, 2003. 310x228 mm; 12 1/8x9 inches. Signed in pencil, lower left verso.

Provenance: acquired directly from the artist; private collection.

This haunting work is an excellent example of Whitfield Lovell's portraiture--drawn from a personal archive of approximately 600 studio photographs of anonymous African Americans, most dating from the first half of the 20th century. Lovell combines them with everyday found objects like playing cards, fabric fragments and other vintage objects. Lovell first used such drawings on wood panels in a series of large installations, which gained national acclaim. His work is found in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Museum of American Art, Washington, DC, the Seattle Art Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Yale University Art Gallery.
