JOSEF FENNEKER (1895-1956)

MARMORHAUS / BACCARAT. 1920.

28 1/2x37 1/4 inches, 72 1/4x94 1/2 cm. Otto Troitzsch, Berlin.
Condition B: replaced losses with overpainting and creases in margins and right text and image; repaired tear along horizontal fold in left image, through Japan; darkening and toning at edges and in image. Mounted on Japan.

Within a decade after he settled in Berlin, in 1918, Josef Fenneker designed over 300 movie posters. He primarily worked for two movie houses, the Marmorhaus and the Mozartsaal, but also designed images for the large German movie producer UFA. From the beginning of his career, Fenneker developed his own personal style, which drew largely on German Expressionism combined with a flair of aesthetic decadence. This poster advertises the 1919 silent German drama, Baccarat, described as a "Casino Tragedy."
