JOSEPH B. CORCORAN JR. (1925-1968)
Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night.

Cartoon published in the Baltimore Sun Times, circa 1960. Ink and wash on Bristol board. 290x445 mm; 11½x17½ inches. Signed "Corcoran" in lower right image.

A fun and surreal cartoon spot illustration by Joseph Corcoran Jr. of a U.S. mail carrier serenely drifting through the air on a chilly night. At the bottom is a banner quoting the familiar unofficial Postal Service creed: "Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night..." Corcoran originally created the image for the Baltimore Sun publication circa 1964, which (based on the publication notes) may have been titled "These Couriers News."

Additional Details

Joseph Corcoran was Baltimore-based cartoonist and illustrator who worked prolifically during his unfortunately short career, having passed away at age 42. According to his 1968 Baltimore Sun Times obituary, he was "...a leading cartoonist and illustrator of pretty girls and city life… whose drawings covered a wide range of subjects... For the past fifteen years he had delighted readers with humorous drawing on Baltimore life, or more whimsical sketches of family scenes appearing in The Sunday Sun and The Evening Sun… He frequently worked on several projects at once and was one of the most productive and versatile artists in the art department."
