JULES CHERET (1836-1932) L'ENFANT PRODIGUE. 1890.
90 x 33 3/4inches. Chaix, Paris.
Condition B+: vertical and horizontal folds; creases and abrasions in image. Two sheets.
For this pantomime Cheret devises an image that is in two ways characteristically different from his other posters. His usual splash of reds and yellows is conspicuously absent, and the overall color scheme is blue, which he uses to set a nighttime scene. Also, the central figure, while bearing predominantly feminine features (her face and legs) is virtually indistinguishable as one of his cherished Cherettes. In 1907 this pantomime was turned into the first feature-length motion picture (over 90 minutes) filmed in Europe. This variant exists without the publisher's name and address at the bottom. Broido 236 (var), Maindron 205 (var), DFP II 194 (var).
