In the days before television and inexpensive train travel, there was no better or more enjoyable way for ordinary people to learn about different cultures, art, food, music and even scientific discoveries than visiting a world's fair. The 1889 exhibition in Paris attracted 32 million visitors. At the center of the exhibition was the brand new and extraordinary Eiffel Tower. But in addition there were countless other, smaller exotic attractions that left an indelible memory. The Javanese Kampong [neighborhood] was one such exhibit. When the World's Fair came to an end, the Musée Grévin decided to take some of the highlights for their standing show. Cheret had designed posters for the Musée Grévin ever since they opened in 1882, and proceeded to create more than 20 different posters for them. Brodio 466, Maindron 379.
