JULIUS KLINGER (1876-CA 1942) "DONAULAND." Circa 1914. 39x24 1/8 inches, 99x61 cm. Jos. Roller & Co., Vienna. Condition B+: repaired tears, creases and restoration in margins and image and along vertical and horizontal folds. In 1918, Klinger moved from Berlin to Vienna where he remained until 1929. It appears that before he moved he was already working on commissions there. We can date this poster via Klinger's signature, which differed throughout his career. Advertising a magazine, Klinger has created a thoroughly modernistic image, depicting a bird's-eye view of a white plane (probably a German Taube) flying over a bend in the Danube. The message is clear: the Donau Magazine watches and sees everything in the region and uses the most advanced means to gather information. Previously unrecorded.
