JULIUS USSY ENGELHARD (1883-1964) WOHLTÄTIGKEITS-ABEND. 1916.
26x48 1/2 inches, 66x123 cm. Meisenbach, Riffarth & Co., Munich.
Conidition B+: restored loss in bottom left corner and margin; repaired tears in margins and image; restoration along vertical and horizontal folds.
Engelhardt studied at the Akademie in Munich under Von Stuck. He went on to do illustrations for the magazine Simplicissimus and was a prolific poster designer. He specialized in fashion images, luxury items and elegant bars, which he advertised in his mannerist Art Deco style. During World War I he designed several posters in support of the German war effort, and during this period his work largely reflected the influence of Ludwig Hohlwein. After the war, Engelhard's work began to take on it own, more illustrative and elegant style. Here, he is advertising a "charity evening" to benefit the Red Cross, which appears to have been an exhibition by auto mechanics on how to replace or repair, motors.
