KIMBEI, KUSAKABE (1841-1934)
Elegant album with 60 delicately hand-colored photographs, comprising occupationals as well as landscape and cityscape scenes of Yokohama and Kyoto, and various ceremonies, lavish temples and geishas. Hand-colored mounted albumen prints, each approximately 8x10 1/4 inches (20.3x26 cm.), and the reverse, each with a caption, in English, on a typed label below the image area, and some with an inventory number in the negative. Oblong folio, black lacquer covers depicting a woman riding in a hand-pulled carriage with ivory inlay (lacking the woman's face) and gilt highlights, the leather backstrip partially perished and detached; with Kimbei's purple oval hand stamp on the front and rear pastedowns. Circa 1885-1889
