McLeary (1901-1949) was an architect, artist and muralist. He was born in Weimar, Texas and studied at the University of Texas, Austin. He moved to Pittsburgh in 1928, which became his adopted hometown, and taught architecture at Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University) for the rest of his career. Among McLeary's most notable murals is the Defense of Human Freedoms, which he painted in 1942 in the lobby of the Harry S. Truman Building in Washington, D.C. He also painted murals in Pittsburgh and New York.
