Two items relating to a New Yorker article about him by Jeremy Bernstein: printed draft of the article with numerous holograph remarks, unsigned * Typescript, with several holograph corrections and additions, unsigned, supplemental comments on the article. The printed draft, with remarks in red, blue, or black ink, usually brief marginal phrases adding information, contesting statements, or offering alternative phrasings. Among the remarks are many relating to the film, 2001: A Space Odyssey, then not yet completed, including one about the colorful sequences at the end of the film: "I do not wish to have this described. Gives away too much." First published in the November 12, 1966 issue. 29 1/2 pages, tall 4to, printed one page to a leaf, stapled together at top left; minor soiling on first page, scattered paper labels cover some notes. The typescript, 54 numbered paragraphs of commentary corresponding to manuscript numerals in the printed draft's margins, with corrections in red, blue, or black ink. The comments include reflections on personal preferences, such as his "preoccupation with hi-fidelity equipment and portable tape recorders for dictation . . . being part of my general interest in all things that save time"; they also include insights into how he conducted research for 2001: "I knew the things were not technically absurd otherwise I wouldn't have considered doing them. I merely wanted to find out how likely they were to be realized by 2001." 15 pages, 4to, stapled together at top left. Np, 21 May [1966]
