LEM (DATES UNKNOWN) A LA PLACE CLICHY. 1901.
47 5/8x33 7/8 inches. Chaix, Paris.
Condition B+: restored losses and repaired tears in top and right margins; repaired tear in right image; vertical and horizontal folds.
Lem's small output of posters is all that survives of his biography, nothing is known about the man (or woman) whose signature bears a passing resemblance to Pal's. As an employee of the Chaix printing house, Lem would have been a disciple (albeit one of the lesser known) of Jules Cheret. A La Place Clichy, one of the leading Parisian department stores, took an aggressive role in using posters as advertising. For several years Cheret had an exclusive contract with the store, and the whole Chaix team produced posters for them. Here, a buxom young lady is strolling through the countryside. While the image is more realistic and less artistically stylized than a Cheret, it is still immensely appealing.
