LOUIS J. RHEAD (1858-1926)

SALON DES CENT. 1897.

26x19¾ inches, 66x50¼ cm. Chaix, Paris.
Condition B+: repaired tears, creases and restoration at edges and along vertical and horizontal folds; small replaced losses in corners; pencil writing in bottom right margin.

Rhead's international prominence led him to become the only American artist ever honored by a one-man show at Paris' famed Salon des Cent. For this show featuring 60 of his works, Rhead designed the poster in his trademark Arts and Crafts style, depicting a muse with palette and brushes in hand. Note that the colors on her palette are the same three that Rhead employs to execute this image.
