LUCIAN BERNHARD (1883-1950) BISCOTTES RAHN. Gouache maquette with collage. Circa 1911.
8x11 3/4 inches.
Condition A-: abrasions and minor staining in image; tape on verso. Paper.
At the beginning of the 20th century, Lucian Bernhard invented a new, modern and efficient way to design posters. His Sachsplakat (object poster) presented a bold, realistic image of the product being advertised against a solid background. In addition to the images themselves, Bernhard also created efficient typography that fit the images and the posters he designed. The original artworks and maquettes that we are offering in the following lots were gifted to the present owner by Lucian Bernhard himself in the 1960s. This is a classic, delectable still life, with the typography in a brown cartouche. Although to the best of our knowledge this image was never realized as a poster, it seems clear that the product was of a high caliber, or at least had pretensions as such, as the German word for biscuit is Zweiback. The image is a perfect example of Bernhard's minimal approach.
