Austrian born illustrator and author of the famed Madeline books, Ludwig Bemelmans (1898-1962), who came to New York in the 1910s, also created many covers for The New Yorker. While this piece may be atypical subject matter for Bemelmans, there is a type of Hibiscus named Madeline.
