LUDWIG HOHLWEIN (1874-1949) NACHTIGALL SCHLAG. 1910.
26 7/8x22 1/4 inches. G. Schuh & Cie., Munich.
Condition B+: creases, repaired tears, minor overpainting and restored losses inmargins; vertical and horizontal folds.
Nachtigallschlag (The Song of the Nightingale) was a record label launched by the German Grammophon Company. Employing a sophisticated use of shadows, Hohlwein represents a nightingale perched on a rose bush against a full moon beneath a starry sky. As with many of his product advertisements from this period (1908-1911), Hohlwein made minimal use of colors and used thick, sans-serif typography organized as a block at the bottom of the poster. A strikingly efficient image. Very rare. DFP III 1375, Hohlwein 144.
