LUDWIG HOHLWEIN (1874-1949) UNIVERSITATS-TATTERSALL. 1912.
33 1/4x38 1/4 inches. G. Schuh & Cie., Munich.
Condition B+: repaired tears and creases in margins and image; minor foxing in margins; restored losses in top margin.
Designing this poster was certainly a pleasure for Hohlwein. A lover of animals and a passionate rider, he loved to represent horses. This tour-de-force design is an archetype of his virtuosity. Using only two colors and the white of the paper, he presents a saddled horse with a little terrier at his feet. Tattersall's is the most famous British auctioneer of horses, and the name has been liberally used in conjunction with the high end of the equestrian market around the world. Here it advertises a private firm offering lessons, stables and riding equipment to Munich's upper classes. Frenzel 41 (var), DFP III 1412.
