LUDWIG HOHLWEIN (1874-1949) ZOOLOGISCHER GARTEN MUNCHEN. 1912.
49 1/2x35 1/4 inches. G. Schuh & Cie., Munich.
Condition B+: overpainting, minor restored losses, repaired tears and creases in margins and image; vertical and horizontal folds.
In 1912 Hohlwein designed two new posters for the Munich Zoo. One depicted a leopard and a panther (see Swann Modernist Posters Auction #2006 cover and lot 16), and the other a pink flamingo. This is the much rarer of the two images (it does not appear in Das Fruhe Plakat). Using saturated pinks and reds, Hohlwein composes his graceful drawing of the bird against a dark background from which it virtually shines. Not in DFP III, Not in Hohlwein, Frenzel 16, Rademacher 84.
