LUDWIG HOHLWEIN (1874-1949) ZOOLOGISCHER GARTEN MUNCHEN. 1911.
48 3/8x36 1/8 inches. G. Schuh & Cie., Munich.
Condition B+: restored losses, repaired tears and creases in margins; minor abrasions in image.
Animals of all kinds were a source of inspiration for Hohlwein and he drew them with an ease and deftness born of respect. Animals feature in many of his posters and he was renowned beyond the poster world for his animal sketches. Thus he was the obvious choice for a commission to design the poster for the opening of the Munich Zoo in 1911. Employing magical strokes of color, he depicts a pair of eagles (the German national emblem) against a vibrant green background. The poster exists in two versions, this one being the much rarer first edition, produced to announce the opening of the zoo on August 1, 1911 at 1:00 pm (many other sources incorrectly date the poster to 1912). The other, more common version has more text, explaining entry fees, travel directions and the times of concerts. DFP III 1407, Hohlwein 9 and 180 (var).
