LUDWIG HOHLWEIN (1874-1949) STARNBERGER = SEE. 1910.
37x48 inches, 94x122 cm. Reichhold & Lang, Munich.
Condition B+: replaced losses, creases and extensive expert overpainting in margins.
This sophisticated image, promoting travel via train to Germany's 5th largest freshwater lake, is one of Hohlwein's superb designs. Using only blue, purple and black with small red highlights, he has created a stylized vision of a steamship on the lake at sunset. He uses no outlines in the design, only solid masses of colors and the sublime use of the white paper to depict the seagulls and some lights. Like the unclear demarcation of the horizon, the typography, carved out of negative space, appears to emanate from both the sky and the lake. A masterpiece of graphic design.
