LUDWIG HOHLWEIN. (1874-1949) STARNBERGER SEE. 1910.
32 1/2x46 inches, 82 1/2x116 1/2 cm. Reichhold & Lang, Munich.
Condition B: restored losses, repaired tears and creases in margins and image; horizontal folds.
When designing travel posters, Hohlwein always tried to use his synthetical style to create a dramatic, graphic landscape that would strike the eye and the imagination of the viewer. In this sense, Starnberger See is one of his superb designs. Using only blue, purple and black (and tiny red highlights), he has created a stylized vision of the lake at sunset. There are no outlines, only the sophisticated use of solid masses of colors, and the sublime use of the white paper to depict the seagulls and some lights. A masterpiece of graphic design.
