LUDWIG HOHLWEIN (1874-1949) VIER JAHRESZEITEN. Circa 1913.
44x32 inches. Oscar Consee, Munich.
Condition A-: repaired tear and minor foxing in margins; creases in image. Japan.
A passionate hunter and rider, Hohlwein loved animals and frequently used them in his posters. They were a source of inspiration for him and he drew them with an ease and deftness born of respect. For an elegant Munich clothing store, Hohlwein depicts two storks against a black background. Together they are holding a stylized flower in their beaks. Designed in Hohlwein's classic "cut-out" style, the birds are not only joined by the flower, but united by its color! Hohlwein clearly felt that the slim elegance of the birds would speak more highly of the store than any depiction of the latest fashions they were selling. DFP III 1443, Hohlwein/Stuttgart 95.
