Laud, William (1555-1626)
A Speech Delivered in the Starr Chamber, on Wednesday, XIVth of June, MDCXXXVII, at the censure of John Bastwick, Henry Burton and William Prinn.

London, Printed by Richard Badger, 1637.

One of several imprints dated 1637; quarto, title page with the names of the censured gathered in a bracket; crown, rose and thistle woodcut vignette just above the imprint; bound in full sprinkled calf with gilt-tooled monogram surmounted by a crown on front board; rebacked, later label; 1701 engraved armorial bookplate of Algernon Capell on verso of title; final blank L4 present; lacking preliminary blank A1; minor marginal worming in second half; 7 1/8 x 5 1/2 in.

On 14 June 1637, William Prynne, already censured, fined, imprisoned and disfigured by the state under William Laud, Archbishop of Canterbury's rule, was further punished. The Starr Chamber decreed that the remains of his ears be removed, sentenced him to life in prison, and levied a fine of 5,000 pounds. The two men were involved in a vicious ongoing dispute regarding Laud's church policy and the suppression of English Puritans.
