GRANDE SEMAINE D'AVIATION CAEN. 1910.

51 1/2x38 1/2 inches, 130 3/4x97 3/4 cm. Ch. Valin, Caen.
Condition B+: expertly-repaired tears at edges; creases and restoration in margins and image; slight offsetting in image; tax stamp at top right.

Another evocative image from the early days of aviation; a couple, as high up as they can humanly go (in the spires of Caen's Église Saint-Pierre), look skyward at their fellow men achieving even greater heights. The romantic, sunset-colored sky adds to the overall dramatic effect of the image. 1910 was an incredible year for aviation meetings, events and competitions. "A rash of aviation meetings broke out in the spring of 1910 in places as diverse as Saint Petersburg, Vienna, Budapest, Bournemouth, Boston, Lanark and New York City" (Looping the Loop p. 57). The event in Caen was not as well-funded as others, and without offering a large cash prize, the event did not attract top name aviators. Affiches d'Aviation p. 57, Perier p. 84.
