MARC AUGUSTE BASTARD (1863-1926) BIERES DE LA MEUSE. 1896.
29x20 inches. Lemercier, Paris.
Condtion A: vertical and horizontal folds.
Bastard was born in Geneva and is mostly known for his decorative designs in fabric and wallpaper. This is the only poster he designed, for a brewery, which went on to be immortalized, the following year, in a poster by Alphonse Mucha. Bastard's style is textbook French Art Nouveau, with the heavy influence of Eugene Grasset apparent in the stylized clouds and the patterned dress of the young woman. The eye-catching image is intensified by the bright colors against the dark background. DFP II 51, Reims 218, Litfass p. 120.
