MAURICE BIAIS (1872-1926) QUINQUINA VOUVRAY. 1901.
53 5/8x39 inches. P. Vercasson & Cie., Paris.
Condition B+: large repaired tear through image.
A rotund waiter is standing over one of his patrons, a decadent flapper who appears to be digging for some change. (This could be a self portrait of Biais). The green background, the large flat areas of black and the clever use of the white of the paper all serve to build a powerful, modernist image. Only the table, the glass and the bottle are treated in a descriptive, realistic way. Given its hyper-realism, it is likely that Biais let another lithographer working at Vercasson draw the bottle. Maitres 1900 p. 64.
