MICHAEL J. SMOLLIN (1925-2010)
Hippie.

Drawing for unknown purpose, circa 1969. Pen and ink on paper. 305x239 mm; 12x9 inches (page), adhered to 13⅞x10⅞-inch board. Signed "M. Smollin" in bottom right image. 1960s label for Joe Mendola gallery on 331 Madison Avenue, with "Smollin" written in black marker on verso.

A very expressive ink drawing by Michael J Smollin of a hippie character, possibly a depiction of 1960s icon Abbie Hoffman. Smollin is among the most celebrated of Sesame Street illustrators, most notably for The Monster at the End of the Book: Starring Lovable, Furry Old Grover (1971). This drawing is permeated with Smollin's distinctive style and sense of character personality, and the atypical subject, for those more familiar with his children's illustrations, shows his connection to 1960s counterculture.
