Moore," to cousin Sarah Ann Moore-Hodges ("Dear Sarah"), explaining that he has "not had spirit to answer" her letter due to his poor eyesight, and reporting that he has advised Theresa [his daughter, Maria Theresa Barrington?] to come home across the ocean despite the state of political affairs. 1 1/2 pages, 8vo, written on the recto and verso of a single sheet; horizontal folds, uneven toning on verso. ". . . If ever my eyes get well, it will be slow work. I can use them during the day; but do not read at night. I sit in the corner, deaf and dumb; miserable work! and go to bed not long after the children.
"Yesterday, I had a letter from Theresa, asking my advice about . . . the state of our political affairs. She is afraid that we are on the eve of civil war. I tell her that I can do nothing but, like others, conjecture how all is to end, and that my guess is not worth having. She has taken her passage in the May steamer but had some thought of coming earlier. I have told her that I cannot see how our public affairs can affect her passing the ocean; and should choose the pleasantest and safest season. . . ."
