OSKAR BIE (1906-1976) SCHNACKENBERG KOSTÜME / PLAKAT UND DEKORATIONEN. 1922.

By the time Schnackenberg began working in Munich, he had already completed his artistic studies and spent two years in Paris. In his career he worked as a poster designer, and as a stage and costume designer. His posters are an incarnation of the extravagance, decadence and morbidity at the center of Weimar-era indulgences. Like Lautrec in Paris, Schnackenberg left us a visual gallery of the demimonde of Munich's night life; filled with weird performers and dancers. This book was published in 1922, at the peak of his career. It is an extraordinary document depicting not just his posters, but also costumes and stage designs that further demonstrate his genius. Unlike ordinary reproductions, the plates in this book are more in keeping with the Maitre des l'Affiche images, in that they were pulled by Oskar Consee, Schnackenberg's exclusive printer, and were surely done under the artist's supervision, with superb, rich inking on high-quality paper.
