OTTO BARTH (1876-1916)

WINTERSPORT IM STEIR. SALZKAMMERGUT. Circa 1915.

39x26 inches, 99x26 cm. Cristoph Reisser's Söhne, Vienna.
Condition B+ / A-: minor creases, abrasions, repaired tears and repaired pin holes in margins; repaired tear at lower right image; minor creases in image.

A view of a skier taking to the air off the ski-jump at Mitterndorf, which was accessible by rail via the Salzkammergutbahn. Barth was an avid mountaineer who made many ascents with his friend and fellow artist Gustav Jahn. In addition to his posters for the Austrian railway, Barth was also a book illustrator, muralist and mosaicist, with a prominent example being in the Salzburg train station. Unlike Jahn "who used Art Nouveau inspired floral frames, Barth framed his posters with strict geometric borders following the example of the Wiener Werkstätte" (Two Alpinists p. 6).
