OTTO GUSSMANN (1869-1926) DRITTE DEUTSCHE KUNST - GEWERBE - AUSSTELLUNG / DRESDEN. 1906.
35 1/2x23 1/2 inches, 90x59 1/2 cm. Wilhelm Hoffmann, Dresden.
Condition B+: repaired tears, replaced losses and restoration in margins.
Gussmann was a multi-talented Arts and Crafts practitioner, an interior designer, muralist, stained-glass artist, ceramist and more. He taught painting and ornament at Dresden's Royal Academy of Fine Arts, where his two most famous students were Max Pechstein and Otto Dix. "Held in Dresden in 1906, the Third German Arts and Crafts Exhibition signaled a new direction in design and interior decoration and led to the founding of the German Werkbund the following year . . . That the exhibition poster was so clearly inspired by the Jugendstil (i.e., the floral motifs, the figure's flowing hair and dress) is ironic, since the German Werkbund championed a new style that supplanted it" (German History in Documents and Images, http://germanhistorydocs.ghi-dc.org). This is his only poster. DFP-III 1130, Wember 384, MoMA P317.
