OTTO SCHNEIDER (1875-1946) IV. INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY GAMES. 1930.
35 1/4x23 1/2 inches 90x59 1/2 cm. Von Heedt & Ganss G.M.B.H., Darmstadt.

The International University Games were a precursor to the Universiade. They began in Paris in 1923, then called the "International Universities Championships." The following year they were held in Warsaw and were referred to as the "Summer Student World Championships," and in 1930 they were renamed "The International University Games." For these games in Darmstadt, the artist presents a neo-classical image of a naked athlete, a visual tribute to the original Olympic games. There is no biographical information on Schneider, suggesting that he was a student.
