PAL ( JEAN DE PALEOLOGUE, 1860-1942) SOCIETE DU GAZ ACETYLENE. Circa 1898.
573/4x43<1/4> inches. Paul Dupont, Paris.
Condition B+: repaired tears in margins and image; overpainting in margins.
Women were clearly the source of Pal's inspiration, and he continuously depicted them in his posters wearing as little clothing as possible. In this image for lamp oil he illustrates the incarnation of light, and the symbolic image of progress, as a naked women (clad only in the wisps and curls of darkness that are scattering beneath her illumination). The other forms of contemporary lighting depicted in the poster are personified by additional scantily clad female allegories. Again Pal seems to be thumbing his nose at the Parisian censors.
