PAL (JEAN DE PALEOLOGUE, 1860-1942) RAYON D'OR. Circa 1895.
26x30 inches. Paul Dupont, Paris.
Condition B+: repaired tears and abrassions in image. Framed.
Rayon d'Or (The Golden Beam), a gas light, is perhaps Pal's most famous poster. The poster depicts a winged woman, draped in a very transparent shawl drawn, to the welcoming glow from a lamp within a gold star. The light is reflecting off her naked body in a sensuous and exciting way. It seems curious that a poster like La Traite des Blanches (see lot 102 ) was censored, while this one was not. Paris was by no means a prudish city, but this piece goes far beyond the charming girls of Cheret. Weill, p. 48, Wine Spectator, pl. 129, Masters p. 32.
