PAL (JEAN DE PALEOLOGUE, 1860-1942) CASINO DE PARIS / NOUVEAU THEATRE.
48x32 inches. Paul Dupont, Paris.
Condition A-: minor repaired tears and restored losses in top marging; vertical and horizontal folds.
In the 1890s Pal was one of the most prolific poster artists in Paris, designing over 100 posters in practically every field. The theatrical concept of La Revue (literally "review") began in the early 1890s, as an end-of-the-year, satirical round up of all the year's major events. They began in small cabarets but were quickly adopted by larger theatres where they became major productions. Here Pal portrays the old French proverb, that truth comes out of a well, in his favorite manner; as a woman clad only in the thin mists of the evening. She is holding up a mirror to reflect the year gone by. Reims 931.
