RENE PEAN (1875-1940) ALCAZAR D'ETE / LES TABLEAUX VIVANTS. Circa 1890s.
49x341/4 inches. Chaix, Paris.
Condition B+: restoration and overpainting along sharp vertical and horizontal folds; repaired tears in margins and image.
Rene Pean was a student and a close follower of Cheret. They worked together at the Chaix printing firm and many of Pean's images bear a striking resemblance to Cheret's work in drawing style, coloring and even lettering. Pean created posters for varied clients, ranging from cabaret and theater to tourism and department stores. This rare image is for an attraction at the Alcazar d'Ete, a popular, outdoor music hall. The type of act, "Living Tableaux," was very fashionable in Paris, and more or less consisted of any excuse to show a group of girls wearing as little clothing as the censors would allow. This is exactly what Pean shows us, in a kitschy image that was sure to have attracted a lot of attention.
