PAUL COLIN (1892-1986) [BLACKBIRDS.] Oil painting on board.
257/8x201/2 inches.
Condition B+: losses at edges, beneath incised frame-mark.
After World War II, Colin indulged in his nostalgia for the Revue Negre days by drawing and painting variations of his best images from the 1920s. This painting, inspired by The Blackbirds (see The Chassaing Collection, Swann auction # 1978, lot 44), is one of the best of his post-war period. It is a daring layout in which he cuts the two men in half, with vivid strokes that wonderfully recapture the spirit of the 1920s. acquired by the current owner at auction in Paris; Demousset-Deburaux, November 25, 1995, lot 47. Previously offered at Ader Tajan, June 25, 1992 (the Josephine Baker Auction), lot 198.
