PAUL COLIN (1892-1986) CASINO DE PARIS / MITTY TILLIO ET RICAUX. 1928.
62x451/2 inches. H. Chachoin, Paris.
Condition B: creases and restoration along vertical and horizontal folds; repaired tears in margins.
Mitty, Tillio & Ricaux were acrobats who made regular appearances in Parisian music halls. Colin has created a striking piece that emphasizes movement, coordination, and choreography that the troika presented on stage. An ascending dynamic and sense of motion is created through the parallel of the legs of the two men, and by the swirling movement of the woman in the air. This is complemented overall by the splash of bright colors in their costumes and the shadows behind them. One of the best circus posters in the history of the genre, and a stylistic precursor to comic book art. Printed as a stock poster, some copies exist with the imprint "Casino de Paris." Weill/Rennert no. 68, p. 70 (var).
