PAUL COLIN (1892-1986) ENDJA MOGOUL. 1928.
61x45 inches. H. Chachoin, Paris.
Condition B: restoration, repaired tears and overpainting in margins and in image; repaired tears and creases along vertical and horizontal folds.
With the exception of a poster offered for sale in the Chassaing Collection (Swann Auction #1978, lot 60, which at the time we believed to be "the only surviving legacy of this performer"), there is no available information on this enticing dancer. Clearly she was part of the Parisian Music Hall world in the late 1920s, and was persuasive enough to convince Jean Don and Paul Colin to design posters for her. Judging from the outright sensuousness of this image, one can imagine that Colin was hardly indifferent to her charms. It is the sexiest and most erotically provocative poster that he ever designed! Ironically, even with this outstanding promotional material, Endja still didn't become a star.
