REMBRANDT VAN RIJN
The Descent from the Cross: Second Plate.

Etching and engraving, 1633. 525x418 mm; 20 3/4x16 1/2 inches. Biörklund's second state (of 5), before the address of Uylenburgh lower right; Usticke's first state (of 5); White and Boon's second state (of 5). Strasburg Lily watermark (Ash/Fletcher 36 C. b., which they date to Amsterdam from the first half of the 1600s; there are 2 impressions of this subject, also in the second state, with nearly identical watermarks, in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam). With thread margins or trimmed on the plate mark. A brilliant, dark and richly-inked impression of this large etching, with strong contrasts and no sign of wear, consistent with the earliest impressions of this subject. Bartsch 81; Biörklund 33-C; Hollstein (White and Boon) 81.
