RICK VEITCH (1951- ) AND ALFREDO ALCALA (1925-2000)
Swamp Thing #58, story page 19.

Original comic book art for the story, "Exiles," in Swamp Thing (DC, March 1987). Pencils by Rick Veitch and inked by Alfredo Alcala. Guest lettered by Todd Klein. Ink, pencil, blue pencil, and correction fluid on Bristol board. 432x286 mm; 17x11¼ inches, taped to 20x15-inch mat. Unsigned.

Vietch and Alcala implement a design that effectively follows two storylines simultaneously: Swamp Thing using his abilities to encourage vegetation growth on the planet Rann, while Alanna uses a special device to discover she is pregnant, the first instance of a fruitful womb on Rann in decades.

Additional Details

This work is a prime example of the comics creation process, as well as the history of comic book production. A note in the upper right margin reveals a change in the depiction of a partially-dressed Alanna. "Raise robe to line" is perhaps a sign that DC was still adhering to the self-censorship of the Comics Code Authority, established in 1954.
