ROBERT RISKO.
"Chita Rivera and Liza Minnelli in "`The Rink.'" Illustration of the actresses in the 1984 Broadway musical production of The Rink, created to accompany the show's announcement in Vanity Fair magazine, published March 1984, page 41. Mixed media, including gouache, airbrush and pencil. 597x485 mm; 23 1/2x18 inches on 26x19 1/2-inch board. Signed "Risko `84" lower right. Vanity Fair pencil notations on verso. A copy of the magazine accompanies the artwork.

The Rink opened on February 9, 1984 at the Martin Beck Theatre, where it ran for 204 performances and 29 previews. Despite the Box Office draw of Minnelli and Rivera, the reviews ultimately did it in, including an especially acerbic one by The New York Times' Frank Rich. It remains a camp favorite and has been occasionally revived. What one can't argue, however, is Risko's spot-on, delightful caricatures in this illustration.
