Additional Details

Paul Robeson (1898-1976), all-star athlete, actor, singer, activist and linguist was the son of an ex-slave and a school teacher. The list of Robeson's accomplishments is staggering, however, like W. E.B. Du Bois, he was labeled a Communist during the Cold War hysteria of the late 1940s. As a result his income fell from more than $100,000 in 1947 to $6000 in 1952. The burgeoning civil rights movement of the late 1950s brought with it something of a rehabilitation for Robeson, especially among people of color. However, his career was never able to regain the tremendous momentum it had prior to the Cold War. Fifteen years of harassment had taken its toll on his health as well. Robeson died in 1976.
