a fine association Reverend Sampson White was the first pastor of the 19th Street Baptist Church, first African-American church in Washington D. C. (1839-1841). The owner of this photograph was the reverend Walter Henderson Brooks, pastor of the 19th Street Baptist Church from 1882 to 1945. Brooks was a temperance leader and published poet (The Black Man's Soliloquy, Original Poems, Pastor's Voice).
