Rodney, discussing various proposals for the figurehead at the prow of the USS Delaware, contradicting rumors that Commander Porter is going to the Pacific, and adding that Captain Jones has been appointed to command the Constitution. 2 pages, 4to, with integral blank; minor bleed-through affecting text of first page. ". . . They . . . signified their preference of a figure to represent Tamonary: & we accordingly gave orders that the head of the Delaware should consist of a full length figure of an Indian chief. . . . [so] that the ship might be distinguished by her head from the Ohio, which ship has a bust only of an Indian chief.
"Minerva is perhaps one of the most appropriate names for a ship of war. . . . I think we should have preferred a bust of the gentleman from Delaware whose name stands first inscribed on that exalted instrument, the Declaration of Independence. . . ."
