RUFINO TAMAYO
Sandías.

Color lithograph, 1972. 890x590 mm; 35x23 1/4 inches, full margins. Signed and numbered 19/100 in pencil, lower margin. Printed by Bank Street Atelier, New York, with the blind stamp lower right. Published by Transworld Art, New York. A very good impression with vibrant colors.

Tamayo (1899-1991) remained close to his Oaxacan heritage throughout his career. While influenced by Fauvism, Cubism and Surrealism, having close ties to fellow Mexican muralists such as Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco and David Alfaro Siqueiros, and drawing significantly from native Mexican arts and spirituality, he developed a distinctly individual, modern style. During the mid-20th century, and especially during the ascent of his productive printmaking career, Tamayo's style has an affinity with Surrealism, looking back to earlier works by artists including Joan Miró and Max Ernst. Pereda 133.
