Franklin and the crews of the British naval ships Erebus and Terror became icebound in the Arctic during a surveying voyage in 1847. Richardson, a seasoned explorer of the region who had personally travelled with Franklin in the past, followed the Mackenzie River and searched the shores of Wollaston Peninsula and Victoria Island in an overland trek to locate the lost sailors. With assistance from 17,000 pounds of canned pemmican, and Iroquois and Chippewa navigators, the rescuers journeyed by canoe and portage. Despite failing to find Franklin and any members of his ill-fated crew, Richard has many ethnographic and geographic observations and contributions to report, along with natural history notes, and more. Unfortunately, all members of Franklin's original expedition perished in the Arctic.
