First edition of this epic poem praised by Cervantes in Don Quixote, with introductory sonnets by Cervantes, Luis de Vargas, Diego de Rozas Manrique, and Luis Gongora; illustrated with woodcut arms and portrait; lacking the final leaf; signature Gg with two versions of leaf 235 present (nine leaves); bound in full green morocco decorated in gilt by Chambolle-Duru; ex libris Angel Uriarte, with his arms in gilt on both covers and bookplate; two gilt morocco book labels of Isidoro Fernandez inside front board; contents washed, pressed, and toned; aeg., 5 3/4 x 3 3/4 in.

Countrymen, colleagues and close friends, Cervantes and Rufo were contemporaries, both born in 1547. In the present work, Rufo follows classical motifs, crafting his historical epic with the tales of heroes and war, setting his twenty-four cantos during the Moorish rebellion in Granada and at other battles from the period.
