Additional Details

Salgado's iconic images of the Greater Burhan Oil Field were shot thirty days after the war against Iraq was declared finished. Kuwaiti oil wells had been set on fire by retreating Iraqi forces and were still burning. The devastation that ensued meant the region was covered with black clouds of smoke while the land was saturated with oil. Burning wells spewed 65-foot-high geysers of oil and gas into the air, and teams of specialists spent weeks fighting to control the fires. The stench and heat made extinguishing the fires extremely challenging.
